Why We’re riding for the Y (Move to Give 2017)

Collingwood Dental Team Name: PLAQUE PEDDLER’S

This year we have 15-20 Participants, including all of our Dentists!

We will be getting our sweat on this April 1st in order to raise money for a great cause. One that is near and dear to our hearts.

The YMCA is a pretty special place and means something different to all of us…

Dr. Robert Reid

I have been a member of the Y ever since I moved to Collingwood in 1990. It has been great to see its’ evolution over the years as it grew from 1500 members to over 4,000 now. My kids learned to swim there. They went to Y camps and YMCA childcare and my grandson too. The Y has great values that are found throughout their programming and these have been passed on to my family.

I am riding and raising money so that more people from Collingwood can have that same experience for their families. I wouldn’t want financial hardship to be a barrier for them. I hope they will find it as rewarding as I have. To me, the Y stands for healthy values, healthy families and healthy communities. They deserve our support.

Dr. Mohammed Saigar

The Ymca is a inspiration for me because it represents the best of us. The welcoming culture regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation is a example of the micro niche that is representative of this great country Canada

Of course the ever smiling staff always uplifts me whenever I go and leave the Y

Dr. Zain Saigar

My Y is where friends and family meet to empower one another to being better people, living healthier lifestyles and improving their lives and the lives of those around us. I love working out at the Y because the staff challenge me to push the limit.  It’s my outlet.

The Surprising Risk Factors for Oral Cancer and How to Prevent it

The number of new cases and deaths due to oral cancer is higher than cervical or liver cancer. The 5-year survival rate for oral cancer is 63%, lower than the survival rates for prostate, melanoma or cervical cancers.

The good news is; Oral cancer is a PREVENTABLE DISEASE!

RISK FACTORS:

  • You use tobacco products, especially if combined with high alcohol consumption.
  • You regularly drink a lot of alcohol.
  • Your lips are exposed to the sun on a regular basis.
  • You have Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
  • Your diet is low in fruits and vegetables – robbing you of important protective factors
  • You are over the age of 40.
  • You are male. Men are twice as likely to develop oral cancer, even though this gap is narrowing.

PREVENTION:

Make a commitment to reduce your risk today:

  • Quit smoking or using other tobacco products.
  • Reduce alcohol consumption.
  • Use a condom to reduce your risk of HPV infection.
  • Use UV protection on your lips when you’re outside and exposed to the sun.
  • Eat a healthy diet including 5-7 servings of vegetables and fruit daily.
  • Brush and floss your teeth daily to reduce oral infections.

Visiting your dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups is another important step in screening for and preventing oral cancers.

Teeth in a Day

What’s The Deal With Teeth In A Day?

Missing and decaying teeth can equal pain and embarrassment and affect your ability to chew your favourite foods. If you have lost (or are about to lose) most or all of your teeth in the upper or lower arches of your mouth, getting a whole new set of teeth in a day is a tempting option.

Created by Nobel, the teeth in a day concept is officially known as All-on-4®. It’s an implant system that allows you to enter the dental office with missing or failing teeth and leave with a full set of teeth in just one day. Four to six dental implants (per arch) are implanted at specific angles to support a full-arch prosthesis (or bridge), for a permanent, non-removable denture alternative.

Sounds like a dream right? Indeed there are benefits – heading home with a brand new smile in one day tops the list. Plus, you get the look of natural teeth, improvement of your facial structure and increased ability to speak and eat. But faster isn’t always better.

“We have the ability to do teeth in a day, but we choose not to,” notes Collingwood Dental Centre’s Dr. Zain Saigar. “We’re in a society that wants quicker, faster, but the reality is that waiting the necessary time to allow the mouth to heal makes things more predictable in the long run.”

In a previous blog post, we told you how dental implants work and how they can benefit your bone structure. In order to get the optimum benefits from dental implants, they are inserted over time. The process can take up to a year. First, the dentist removes the tooth and restores the bone underneath with powdered cadaver bone that converts into your bone or artificial material that mimics bone. From there, you wait six months as your body does its magic – joining the implanted bone with your own bone.

Rethink Teeth in a Day

Then it’s time to insert the manmade, cylindrical post that will form the foundation of your new tooth. After six more months, a replacement tooth that looks and feels like a natural tooth is attached to the implant. The procedure is optimized to allow your body the time it needs to accept the dental implant successfully. “That way we know we’ve done everything we potentially could do on our end to promote healing,” says Dr. Saigar.

“If a tooth is infected and I’m taking it out, I don’t want to put an implant in that infected site,” he adds. “If you’re going to take teeth out and put implants in the same day and then put a denture on top of it and put stress on the system, there’s a good chance something’s going to fail.”

It’s important to note that performing the treatment over time does not cost more than the teeth in a day process. “If people are spending thousands of dollars, they’re going to want to take the time to do it properly,” says Dr. Saigar.
